The EBC provides for substitution of members to ensure that there is continuity in the work of the organisation.

Officers Board Members

Professor Julien Mendlewicz

Prof. Julien Mendlewicz

Prof. Julien Mendlewicz is Professor of Psychiatry at the Free University of Brussels. Professor Mendlewicz is an active member of many international scientific societies and has held offices such as Secretary of the European brain council ( EBC), President of the Collegium Internationale Neuro Psychopharmacologicum (C.I.N.P.) He is currently President of the European College of Neuro Psychopharmacology (E.C.N.P.) and has been instrumental in launching the European Decade of Brain research. His research interests include molecular neurobiology and behavioral genetics, chronobiology and sleep and neuropharmacology.

Professor William Gray

William Gray

Prof. William Gray is Professor of Neurosurgery in the Division of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Southampton. He is Secretary of the UK Chapter of the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE), chairs the Academic Committee of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) and is a member of the c System Diseases Specialist Group of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in the UK. His research interests include studying neural stem cells in the adult brain, particularly in the context of their reaction to epilepsy and traumatic brain injury.

Professor Jes Olesen

Prof. Jes Olesen

Prof. Jes Olesen is past President and founding member of the EBC. Prof. of neurology at the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Neurology (Glostrup Hospital), he is a specialist in the area of migraine and other headaches. He is past President of the Danish Headache Society, the Scandinavian Migraine Society and the International Headache Society, a co-founder of the European Federation of Neurological Associations (EFNA) and past President of the European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS).

Prof. David Nutt

Prof. David Nutt is Professor of Psychopharmacology and Head of the Department of Community Based Medicine at the University of Bristol. His main research interests are in the brain mechanisms underlying anxiety, depression and addiction and the mode of action of therapeutic drugs. He is Chair of the UK Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), President of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) and a Director of the ‘European Certificate in Anxiety and Mood Disorders’ and the ‘Masters in Affective Disorders’ Courses jointly administered by the Universities of Maastricht, Bristol and Florence.

Mary G Baker, MBE

Mrs Mary G Baker, MBE

Mrs Mary G Baker, MBE is President of EFNA, Past President of the European Parkinson’s Disease Association and a consultant to the WHO and Chair of the WHO’s Working Group on Parkinson’s Disease. She is Director at Large for the World Stroke Association, Chair of the British Medical Journal (BMJ)’s Patient Advisory Group and a member of the management board of the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products.

Prof. David Vodušek, substitute for Prof. Jes Olesen, is Medical Director of the Division of Neurology at the University Medical Center Ljubljana, and Professor of Neurology at the Medical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He is a member of the European Board of Neurology / European Union of Medical Specialists, Treasurer of EFNS and Chairman of the EFNS Scientific Panel on Autonomic Nervous System.

Professor Monica Di Luca

Prof. Monica Di Luca

Prof. Monica Di Luca, is Secretary General of FENS, Prof. of Neuropharmacology and Head of the Laboratory of Synaptic Plasticity, Department of Pharmacological Sciences, University of Milan. She is also Vice Chair of the Italian Interdisciplinary Network on Alzheimer’s Disease and a Council Member of the Italian Society for Neuroscience. Her research interests include molecular mechanisms in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease.

Professor Cyril Höschl

Prof. Cyril Höschl

Prof. Cyril Höschl, is President of the AEP. Born in Prague (Czechoslovakia), he started his career in Psychiatric Research Institute (PRI) in Prague. Currently he is a director of Prague Psychiatric Centre and Centre of Neuropsychiatric Studies, and professor of psychiatry and chairman at Charles University in Prague. He is also professor of psychiatry at the University of P.J.Safarik in Kosice, Slovak Republic. His research interests include psychoneuroendocrinology, psychopharmacology and biological psychiatry.

 

Professor Manfred Westphal

Prof. Manfred Westphal

Prof. Manfred Westphal is Secretary of the European Association of Neurological Societies (EANS) and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital, Hamburg.

A neurosurgeon, he is a member of the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Neurochirurgie (German Neurosurgical Society), the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

Professor Henning Saß

Prof. Henning Saß

Prof. Henning Saß substitute for Prof. Cyril Höschl, is Past-President of the Association of European Psychiatrists (AEP) and Medical Director and Chairman of the Board of the Hospital of the University of Technology, RWTH Aachen, Germany. He is a professor of psychiatry, a member of the board of the Association of Medical Faculties in Germany and a consultant to the German Ministry for Science, Education and Technology. His research interests include psychopathology, personality disorders and forensic psychiatry.

Alistair Newton

Mr Alistair Newton

Alistair Newton is Executive Director (and Past President) of the European Dystonia Federation, Secretary-General of EFNA and Acting Treasurer of EBC. He has held positions in a number of British and European organisations involved in patient-related and scientific activities and has led or contributed to many projects which aim to improve the lives of people living with brain disorders.

Mrs Dolores Gauci

Mrs. Dolores Gauci

Mrs. Dolores Gauci is President of GAMIAN-Europe, a pan-European federation of patient advocacy groups whose mission is to encourage and promote information, education and awareness on current knowledge of the treatment and support available to those affected by mental illness. She holds an M.Sc in Health Services Management and is a Social Worker by profession.  Dolores is the Chief Executive Officer of Richmond Foundation – the only NGO in Malta working in Community Mental Health. Mrs Gauci also lectures at the University of Malta providing a service to both the Department of Social Policy and Social Work and the Department of Psychology.

Prof. Helmut Kettenmann

Prof. Helmut Kettenmann

Prof. Helmut Kettenmann President of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies, head of a research group at the Max Delbrueck Center for Molecular Medicine, Berlin and Professor for Cellular Neurobiology at the Humboldt University Berlin (Charité). His area of research is the field of neuron-glia interaction. By organizing the first Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) Forum in Berlin in 1998 he set the starting point for FENS.

Rebecca Müller

Rebecca Müller was born in Zürich, Belgian and Swiss nationality; she was graduated from the University of Ghent, as Master in Art history and Archaeology; finishing with distinction. Rebecca is very experienced in management, general secretarial duties, and translations. She knows six languages: German and Dutch as mother tongue level, as well as English, French, Italian, and Spanish.

   

Reijo Salonen, MD, PhD

Dr Reijo Salonen

Dr Reijo Salonen, is the Senior Vice President of Research and Development and a member of the Executive Management Board of Orion Pharma. Previously, Dr Salonen was Vice President and Worldwide Therapeutic Area Head Neurosciences at Pfizer. A specialist in neurology, he has an MD degree and PhD in Neuroimmunology.

David Neale

David Neale , is Senior Director for Neuromodulation for Medtronic and is based in Switzerland. David has worked for Medtronic for 4 years having recently headed regional operations for several Medtronic Product lines. Recently based in Brazil headed ABIMED, Brazilian medical device association. Prior to Medtronic worked for Baxter Healthcare in Latin America.

Evelyn Sipido

Liaison Officer and Administrator
Ms Evelyn Sipido

Ms Evelyn Sipido is Liaison Officer and Administrator for the EBC and Liaison Officer for EFNS, a position which involves close contact with European and other international scientific societies, as well as government institutions and the EC. She also acts as  Project Coordinator of EFNA. She is based in the Florence office of the EFNS

Dr Ian Ragan

Dr Ian Ragan

Dr Ian Ragan is Director of CIR Consultancy Ltd, which provides consultancy services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. He was the Executive Director of Neuroscience Research, Europe for Eli Lilly until 2004, and acted as their head of European Scientific Affairs until 2007. He is past Chair of the R&D Committee of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, and an ex- member of the Research Directors Group of EFPIA. He is currently a member of the UK government’s Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.

Stuart Hurst

Stuart Hurst

Stuart Hurst, substitute for Dr. Reijo Salonen, is Director, EU Government and Public Affairs for Pfizer and is based in Brussels. Stuart has worked for Pfizer since 1997 during this time he has held a variety of roles in Sales and Marketing, before moving to his current role in 2005. Prior to Pfizer, Stuart worked for Astra and Servier in the pharmaceutical industry, having started his career with Duracell.

José Vázquez

Project Manager
Mr José Vázquez

Mr José Vázquez is Project Manager for the European Brain Council.  He is responsible for encouraging the development of European National Action Groups, as well as National Brain Councils. He is responsible for the national and international dissemination of EBC Studies and projects. He also plays a major role in coordination between European Institutions and the EBC.

Board meetings are also attended by observers from important organisations whose mission is relevant to that of the EBC. Currently the EBC has two observers:

Professor Matilde Leonardi

Prof. Matilde Leonardi

Prof. Matilde Leonardi is the EBC-WHO Liaison Officer. A neurologist, paediatrician and child neurologist, she works at the Italian National Neurological Institute (INN) Besta in Milan, under the direct supervision of the Scientific Director. There she is responsible for all the INN Besta’s liaison activities with the EU. She also works at the WHO in Geneva, where she coordinates the WHO’s global initiative on neurology and public health. She is Vice President of the Italian Federation of Neurological Societies.

Ms Elaine Snell

Ms Elaine Snell

Ms Elaine Snell represents the European Dana Alliance for the Brain (EDAB), which is also an observer to the EBC. EDAB is an alliance of more than 155 eminent brain scientists, including five Nobel laureates, from 27 countries. Founded in 1997, with offices in London and Lausanne, it is modelled on the US-based Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives. It exists to promote brain research, and its major event is Brain Awareness Week, which is an international programme of public events held in March each year.
